DISCLAIMER:

This version of Harvey Dent is primarily based on the version seen in The Dark Knight, however comic canon will be blended in where appropriate. Where The Dark Knight left out many things about Harvey’s motivation/psyche, the writer will try to fill in the blanks, both in a mid-movie verse and a post-movie verse, by relying on what we were given in the movie, comic canon and of course, my own take on it.

The writer is relatively new to the Batman fandom, and as such, this journal is a work-in-progress. While I do not have much experience with the comic canon, I’m doing my best to research and also to read the actual comics. This may take time. If you see something on here that you think is blatantly out of character, shoot me an email [gothams_dent@livejournal.com]. I may not take your advice, but I’m certainly open to hearing it.

And of course, I am not Harvey Dent or the actor who portrays him in The Dark Knight, Aaron Eckhart. All Batman characters are property of DC Comics and their respective writers. This is all in good fun.

What if I say I'm not like the others?

Harvey Dent was born in Gotham City in 1973 to working class parents. His father was an abusive alcoholic who, in public, appeared the model father and husband. Harvey learned about duality at an early age and it is something he has struggled with ever since. He was a scrawny kid who grew into his chin during his high school years, where he established himself as a jock in the popular crowd. Unlike the other kids, Harvey didn’t invite people over after school. In fact, he rarely talked about his home life, but if you asked him, he’d tell you it was all good, and that the shiner on his eye came from a fight he got into on the way home from school or a door that he walked into.

As he reached his last couple of years in high school, Harvey grew more determined to get away from his life as it was and to be different than his father. He was determined to be good in a city run by the bad guys. He was almost desperate to show that he was neither who his genetics said he was nor what the city said he should be.

The desperation turned into drive. After high school, Harvey attended Gotham University and later its law school. He earned his juris doctorate in 1998 and passed the bar not long after.

Upon passing the bar, Harvey immediately went to work for the Gotham City District Attorney’s Office. He spent the first couple of years bouncing around the different divisions, getting a taste for what each type of case was like. He eventually settled in working in conjunction with the Gotham City Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau as an investigating attorney. Here, he made a name for himself by relentlessly going after corrupt police officers. This led to the nickname “Two-Face” by some of those on the GCPD.

After a few years working with IAB, Harvey was known around Gotham as the rising star of the DA’s Office – a golden boy at a time when Gotham needed hope. At the age of 35, he ran for District Attorney on the platform of taking back the City of Gotham from the criminals who had ran it for so long. The “I Believe in Harvey Dent” campaign went viral not long after its inception and the voters of Gotham came out in force to support the so-called “White Knight”. He was elected in a landslide.

It is this point that is used as a springboard for the writer’s portrayal of Harvey Dent. There are several points in time Harvey may be found at in this journal and at the various muse communities he belongs to or may belong to in the future. They will be tagged as follows:

Please be advised that there ARE SPOILERS for The Dark Knight following, in the explanations of the tags.

Timelines:

1. [timeline] pre-TDK This means the entry takes place before the movie – anywhere from the day before the start of it to somewhere back in Harvey’s young childhood.

2. [timeline] mid-TDK This means the entry takes place in the middle of the movie, before the Joker allows himself to get caught, before Harvey becomes Two-Face. The City of Gotham is in distress, but not in the full-scale panic mode that it is toward the end of the film.

3. [timeline] end-TDK This means the entry takes place at the end of the movie, when Harvey's become Two-Face, or close to around there.

3. [timeline] post TDK This verse goes on the assumption that Harvey survives the fall and is now the villain Two-Face.

Verses:

1. [verse] canon Simply put, this is strictly canon.

2. [verse] Shatter This is an RP-based verse that takes place post-TDK. It draws from both RP and older, comic-based canon [namely, the canon where Harvey marries Glinda Dent and they end up having Duela Dent]. In this case, Harvey is with Nadine Lewis knowthenbreak, a woman who, pre-and-during TDK works for the DA's Office under his tutelage. After an encounter with the Scarecrow [arkhams_dr], she returns to work right before the chaos that happens at the end of TDK. After Harvey becomes Two-Face, Nadine, now mentally unstable and ever the loyal employee, goes to work for him, while still working for the DA's office, feeding him insider information to help him commit crimes and occasionally committing them herself . Not long after, she quits the DA's office and they make their life of crime and trying to survive together, including having Duela [questionorigin]. Entries tagged [verse] Shatter may take place anywhere from two weeks post-TDK to twenty years.

3. [verse] pre-Shatter This is pre-Shatter, which by default takes place either pre-or-during TDK, however is RP-based and not strictly canon.
